This week, I went out with my family and came back home, only to find that the garage door would not open. As it turned out, the spring coil above the garage door had broken, and that was why the door would not open. To make matters worse, we did not have the house key with us either. For a moment, I even wondered if we would have to break a window to get inside.
But soon I gathered myself and called a locksmith. Thankfully, the locksmith came quickly, and within about an hour and a half, we were able to get back into the house. I also called a garage door repair company, and by the very next day, they were able to replace the broken spring coil.
As the repairman was fixing it, he said something quite interesting. He told me that the spring coil of a garage door usually lasts about ten years. Then, as he was leaving, he smiled and said, “See you again in ten years.” But that made me wonder: Why does the spring coil only last about ten years?
While he was repairing it, I noticed that when the garage door is closed, a tremendous amount of tension is placed on the spring coil. In other words, the longer the door stays closed, the more pressure continues to build up on that spring.
And as I watched this, something became clear to me. We are much the same way. When we are closed, tension builds up inside us. But when we are open, that tension begins to disappear. In fact, people who are open to others and open to life do not seem to carry as many burdens. They tend to live with greater peace. Perhaps that is why they often seem healthier as well.
That is why God desires for us to remain open. He wants us to meet many different kinds of people. He wants us to receive and understand different thoughts and perspectives. Because when we are open, we can live in peace. And when we live in peace, we can live more safely and securely.
My hope and prayer is that you will always remain open, and through that openness, enjoy the peace God gives. May you always live in His peace, and may you always be safe in His care.
이번 주 가족과 함께 밖에 나갔다가 집에 왔는데, 거라지 문이 안 열리는 일이 있었습니다. 알고 보니, 거라지 도어 위쪽에 있는 코일이 끊어져서 문이 안 열리는 것이었습니다. 설상가상으로 집 열쇠도 없었습니다. 그래서 순간 창문 유리를 깨야 하나 라는 생각이 들었습니다.
하지만 이내 다시 정신을 차리고 locksmith를 불렀습니다. 그리고 정말 다행히도 locksmith가 금방 와 주어서 1시간 반 만에 집으로 들어올 수 있었습니다. 그리고 거라지 수리 업체에게도 전화를 걸어, 하루 만에 끊어진 코일도 잘 교체할 수 있었습니다.
그런데 코일을 교체하시는 분이 아주 재미있는 이야기를 하셨습니다. 원래 거라지 도어의 코일 수명이 10년 정도랍니다. 그러시더니 수리하고 가시면서 10년 있다가 다시 보자고 인사를 하셨습니다. 그런데 문득 이런 질문이 생겼습니다. ‘왜 코일이 10년 정도 밖에 못 버티는 것일까…’
수리할 때 보니, 문이 닫혀 있는 상태가 되면, 코일에 엄청난 탄성력이 걸리는 구조였습니다. 그래서 많이 닫아 두면, 계속 과부하가 걸리는 것이었습니다. 그런데 그것을 보면서 어떤 것이 깨달아졌습니다. 우리들도 닫혀 있으면 긴장감이 높아지고 열려 있으면 긴장감이 사라집니다. 실제로 모든 것들에 열려 있는 사람들은 별로 고민이 없습니다. 그래서 삶을 평안하게 살아 갑니다. 그래서인지 병에도 잘 걸리지 않습니다.
그래서 하나님께서는 우리가 항상 열려 있기를 원하십니다. 다양한 사람들과 폭넓게 만나기를 원하십니다. 다양한 생각들을 받아 들이기를 원하십니다. 왜냐하면 그래야 평안하고 그래야 안전할 수 있기 때문입니다. 소망하는 것은, 항상 열려 있으심으로, 평안을 누리시길 축복합니다. 그래서 항상 안전하시길 축복합니다.
