Last week, I attended a retreat hosted by the San Jose Church Association. As part of the schedule, in a very pastor-like way, we also visited a coffee shop operated by a church.
Since I have also been very interested in church-run cafés, I went there with a sense of anticipation. When I arrived, I looked around carefully here and there. However, I was not able to buy any coffee. It was because there was no place to sit. Every seat was filled with students studying, so there was no available space.
From one perspective, it may have looked good that people were using every seat. But for those working there, or for those who wanted to buy coffee and sit down, the scene did not seem quite as good. And perhaps this is one of the dilemmas of running a café.
It is good when more people are able to enjoy good things. But sometimes, some people want to keep those good things only for themselves. The gospel is the same. Some people want to hear the good news and enjoy it only among themselves. But that is not the will of God.
The better something is, the more it should be shared with others. That is God’s will. When we share good things, they become even better, and God is pleased as well.
My hope is that we may become people who make an effort to help more people enjoy good things together. And through that, I hope we may all rejoice together.
지난주 저는 산호세 교회 협의회에서 주최하는 수련회에 다녀왔습니다. 그리고 일정 중에는 목사님들답게 어떤 교회에서 운영하는 커피숍 방문도 있었습니다.
마침 저도 교회에서 운영하는 카페에 관심이 많았던지라, 기대감을 가지고 그곳에 방문했었습니다. 그리고 가서 이곳저곳을 자세하게 구경했습니다. 하지만 커피를 사먹지는 못했습니다. 왜냐하면 앉을 자리가 없었기 때문이었습니다. 모든 자리에 학생들이 앉아서 공부를 하고 있다보니, 자리가 없었습니다.
어떤 관점에서 보면, 모든 자리들을 사람들이 이용하고 있으니, 좋아 보입니다. 하지만, 그곳에서 일하는 사람들이나 커피를 사먹고 싶은 사람들에게는 그 모습들이 별로 좋아보이지는 않았습니다. 그리고 그 모습이 카페를 운영하는 사람들의 딜레마 같기도 합니다.
좋은 것들을 더 많은 사람들이 이용하면 좋은데, 어떤 사람들은 그 좋은 것들을 혼자만 누리고 싶어 합니다. 그리고 복음도 마찬가지입니다. 어떤 이들은, 좋은 소식을 자기들만 듣고 자기들만 누리고 싶어합니다. 그런데 그것은 하나님의 뜻이 아닙니다. 좋은 것일수록, 더 많은 사람들과 나누는 것이 하나님의 뜻입니다. 그래야 더 좋아지고, 그래야 하나님께서도 기뻐하십니다. 소망하는 것은, 우리들은, 좋은 것들을 더 많은 사람들이 함께 누리는데 힘쓸 수 있기를 소망합니다. 그래서 다 함께 기뻐할 수 있기를 소망합니다.
