Chuseok is coming on the 25th. As the holiday approaches, I suddenly find myself thinking about the Chuseok holidays we used to spend in Korea.

Both my wife’s family and mine lived in Seoul, so on Chuseok Day, we would visit both sides of the family. We would share good food together, watch a movie, and from time to time, we would even go to a jjimjilbang and enjoy a relaxing bath together.

Perhaps because of those memories, whenever Chuseok comes around, I still feel as though I should eat something special with my children, watch a movie with them, and maybe even go to a jjimjilbang. I suppose the habits we formed in Korea have never completely left me.

When I think about it, it is rather remarkable. It has already been more than ten years since we last celebrated Chuseok in Korea, and yet those old habits still remain. Perhaps this is why people often say that habits are so important.

Habits truly do have a powerful influence on our lives, because so much of what we do each day follows the patterns we have formed over time. Good habits tend to lead us toward a good life, while harmful habits can slowly lead us in the wrong direction.

Then what is the best habit we can develop?

For me, one of the best habits is the habit of staying close to the Word of God. Whenever we have a quiet moment, taking time to read and meditate on His Word is a beautiful habit, one that gathers blessings into our lives.

Those who continually meditate on God’s Word will not easily lose their way, because through His Word, God keeps showing them the path they should take.

So I pray that each of us will develop the habit of spending time in God’s Word. And through that habit, may we live lives in which His blessing and guidance follow us wherever we go.
