Last week, our youngest child had a one-week break, so we had a chance to visit an art museum together. While we were there, two things surprised me. One was how many people were visiting the museum, and the other was that I actually recognized more artists than I expected.
I did not expect so many people to visit an art museum during the daytime on a weekday. There were really a lot of visitors, and everyone was looking very carefully at each work of art. Some were even searching for information online while viewing the paintings. So I also started looking at some of the works they were studying. Then I realized that I recognized quite a few names. Van Gogh, Millet, Manet, Monet, and others were names I had heard back in high school.
But that was about as far as I could go. Since I do not know much about art, all I could really do was look at the names and paintings and think, They painted very well. As I stood there, I was reminded again of a simple truth: we can only see as much as we know.
The same is true when it comes to God. We can only see as much as we know about Him. If we do not know God well, we may pass by His works without recognizing them, just as I could look at a masterpiece and simply walk past it. That is why we need to know God well. We need to study diligently and learn more about Him. Then we will begin to see things that we could not see before.
I pray that you will continue to study and learn about God, so that you may at least know what He wants us to know. And I pray that, as you begin to see the works of God more clearly, you will be filled with wonder and amazement at what He is doing.
지난주 막내가 일주일 방학이어서 모처럼 같이 미술관에 다녀왔습니다. 그런데 가서 놀란 것이 두 가지가 있었습니다. 한 가지는 미술관을 찾는 사람들이 정말 많다는 것과 생각보다 제가 알고 있는 미술가들이 꽤 있다는 것이었습니다.
저는 평일 낮에 미술관을 찾는 사람들이 그렇게 많을 줄 몰랐습니다. 정말 많은 사람들이 방문하고 있었고, 다들 작품 하나하나를 아주 집중해서 보고 있었습니다. 심지어는 인터넷으로 검색까지 하며 감상하고 있었습니다. 그래서 저도 그분들이 보고 있는 작품들 중 몇 가지를 같이 따라서 보았습니다. 그랬더니 제가 아는 이름들도 꽤 있었습니다. 고흐, 밀레, 마네, 모네, 등등 고등학교 때 들어본 화가들의 이름들이 있었습니다.
하지만 딱 거기까지였습니다. 미술에 대해서 잘 모르니, 그냥 이름들과 그림들을 보면서 ‘참 잘 그렸구나’ 정도만 느낄 수 있었습니다. 그러며 ‘역시 아는 만큼 볼 수 있구나’라는 단순한 진리를 다시 한번 깨달았습니다.
그런데 하나님에 대한 것도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님도 아는 만큼만 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님에 대해서 잘 모르면, 제가 명작을 보고도 그냥 지나치는 것처럼 그런 일들이 벌어질 수 있습니다. 그래서 하나님에 대해서 잘 알아야 합니다. 하나님에 대한 공부를 정말 열심히 해야 합니다. 그러면 그동안 보지 못했던 것들을 볼 수 있습니다.
꼭 하나님에 대한 공부들도 열심히 하셔서, 하나님께서 우리들이 알기를 원하시는 것 정도는 꼭 아시길 축복합니다. 그래서 하나님의 일들을 보고 크게 감탄해 보시길 축복합니다.
