Last Tuesday, we had the opportunity to serve a meal at a worship gathering of Milal Mission, a ministry for people with disabilities in Northern California. Once again, thanks to the wonderful dedication of several members of our Women’s Ministry, we were able to prepare and serve a delicious bibimbap meal. I sincerely thank everyone who gave their time and effort to make this possible.
Whenever I visit Milal Mission to serve, there is something that always comes to my mind. I am often surprised by how many families have children with disabilities. I think one reason we don’t realize this is that there are certain walls between people with disabilities and the rest of us.
But those walls should never exist in the church. The church should be a place where everyone is welcome. It should be a place where anyone can come, share life together, and become one family in God. As I thought about this, I began to reflect on our own church. I wondered if there might be walls among us that we are not even aware of.
Of course, I am sure there are still some walls in our church. But I believe those walls may be much fewer than in many other churches. One reason is that we already have people with disabilities who come and worship with us. They also enjoy fellowship with others as a natural part of our church family. For this, I am truly thankful.
My prayer is that we will continue to lower these barriers even more. I hope our church will become a place where absolutely anyone can come and feel welcome. And just as Jesus welcomed and cared for those who were often overlooked, I sincerely pray that our church will always be a place that welcomes and serves those who are often forgotten.
지난 화요일 북가주 장애인들의 모임인 밀알 예배에서 식사를 섬겨드리고 왔습니다. 이번에도 여러 여선교회 회원분들의 아주 귀한 헌신으로 맛있는 비빔밥을 잘 준비해 드리고 왔습니다. 수고해 주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
개인적으로 밀알 모임에 가서 섬겨 드릴 때마다, 항상 느끼는 것이 있습니다. 예상보다 장애인 자녀들이 있으신 분들이 굉장히 많다는 것입니다. 그런데 그것들을 잘 못 느꼈던 이유는, 장애인 분들과 우리 사이에 어떤 벽들이 있기 때문이었을 것입니다.
그런데 교회에는 절대로 그런 벽들이 있어서는 안 됩니다. 교회는 누구에게나 열려 있는 곳이어야 합니다. 어떤 사람들도 와서 같이 하며 하나님 안에서 한 가족이 될 수 있는 곳이어야 합니다. 그러다보니 문득 우리 교회를 돌아보게 되었습니다. 혹시 우리 안에도 우리가 잘 모르는 어떤 벽들이 있는 것은 아닌가…
물론 우리 교회 안에도 그런 벽들이 있을 것입니다. 그런데 확신하는 것은, 다른 교회들보다는 훨씬 적을 것이라고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 우리 교회에는 이미 장애인분들이 오셔서 예배를 드리고 있기 때문입니다. 또한 그런 분들이 와서 다른 분들과 자연스럽게 교제하고 있기 때문입니다. 그래서 개인적으로는 정말 감사함을 느끼고 있습니다.
소망하는 것은 더욱 더 그런 문턱들이 더 낮아 질 수 있기를 소망합니다. 그래서 어떠한 분들도 다 오실 수 있는 교회가 될 수 있기를 소망합니다. 그래서 예수님께서 그러셨던 것처럼, 낮은 자들을 위한 교회가 될 수 있기를 간절히 소망합니다.
