저는 한달에 한 번씩 지역 목사님들과 소그룹 모임을 갖고 있습니다. 그렇게 하게 된 이유는 성도님들에게만 모이라고 말하지 말고 직접 우리들도 모여서 모범을 보여 주자는 어떤 목사님의 제안 때문이었습니다. 그래서 이번 주에도 소그룹 모임을 하고 왔습니다. 그런데 목사님들이 모이면 역시 목회에 대한 이야기들을 많이 나누게 됩니다.
이번 주에 나누었던 주제는 어떻게 해야 좋은 동역자를 구할 수 있느냐에 대한 것이었습니다. 모이는 목사님들 중 한 분이 최근에 EM 목사님을 구하려고 어떤 분과 인터뷰를 하셨답니다. 그리고 첫 느낌이 좋아서 백 그라운드 체크를 한번 해 보았답니다. 그랬더니, 이분에게 분노 조절 장애가 있다는 것을 알게 되었답니다. 그래서 그분을, 정중히 거절했는데, 그분이 결국 그 자리에서도 크게 화를 내시더랍니다. 그래서 아주 당황했었다는 이야기를 나누었습니다.
그런데 저는 그 이야기를 듣고, 더 당황했습니다. 왜냐하면 저는 백그라운드 체크 같은 것들은 필요 없다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 저는 기본적으로 성령을 받은 사람들은 삶이 점점 더 좋아진다고 믿습니다. 그리고 그것은 정말 사실입니다. 성령님과 동행하면, 변화되어서 과거와는 전혀 다른 삶을 살게 됩니다. 그러다보니 누군가의 과거를 들춰 볼 필요가 없습니다. 중요한 것은 현재입니다. 그런데 당황스럽게도 그분은 변화되지 않았던 것 같습니다. 심지어 목사였는데도 말이죠.
그런데 성령님과 동행하지 않으면 얼마든지 그럴 수도 있습니다. 계속 과거의 잘못들을 반복하며 살아갈 수도 있습니다. 그런데 그런 모습은 하나님의 복을 발로 차는 행위입니다. 성령님과 동행하면 점점 더 좋아지는데 왜 그것을 누리지 못합니까? 우리는 성령님과 날마다 동행함으로 점점 더 삶이 좋아져야 합니다. 그것이 주님께서 우리들에게 주신 축복입니다. 축복하는 것은 꼭 성령님과 동행하심으로 그 복을 누리시길 축복합니다.
Once a month, I gather with local pastors for a small group meeting. The reason we began doing this was because one pastor suggested that instead of only telling our church members to gather in small groups, we as pastors should also meet together and set an example ourselves. So this week, we had our small group meeting again.
When pastors gather, conversations naturally turn to ministry. This week, the topic we discussed was how to find good coworkers in ministry—faithful partners to serve alongside.
One of the pastors shared that he had recently interviewed someone for an EM pastor position. His first impression of the person was quite positive, so he decided to do a background check. During that process, he found out that the person had serious anger management issues. Because of that, he politely declined to move forward. But even in that moment, the person became very angry and reacted strongly. The pastor shared how surprised and uncomfortable that experience was.
As I listened to that story, I found myself even more surprised. Personally, I have always thought that background checks are not the most important thing. I believe that when a person truly receives the Holy Spirit, their life begins to change for the better. And this is not just an idea—it is true. When we walk with the Holy Spirit, we are transformed, and we begin to live a life that is different from our past.
Because of that, I do not think the most important thing is to dig into someone’s past. What matters most is the present—how they are living now. That is why it was surprising to hear that this person seemed not to have changed, even though he was a pastor.
But if someone is not truly walking with the Holy Spirit, this can happen. A person can continue repeating the same mistakes from the past, again and again. Yet living that way is like pushing away the blessings God desires to give.
When we walk with the Holy Spirit, our lives should gradually become better. Why would we not enjoy that blessing? The Lord has given us this grace—to walk with Him and to be changed day by day.
My prayer and blessing for you is this: may you walk closely with the Holy Spirit every day, and through that fellowship, may you fully enjoy the blessings God has prepared for you.
