Last Sunday, through the loving service of the “Seomgim” small group, we enjoyed delicious kimbap for lunch. As I ate the kimbap, many memories from the church I served before came back to me. During the pandemic, we were not able to gather together or share meals. So every Sunday morning, my wife and I made kimbap. After online worship was over, we would take that kimbap and visit the homes of our church members one by one. In that way, we tried our best to stay connected with one another.
But did you know that kimbap itself carries a meaning of connection? Kimbap is made with many different ingredients. On the outside, it may simply look like seaweed, but inside, many different ingredients must be joined together well with the rice. Only then can it have the best taste. The church is the same way. On the outside, we are gathered under the name of Jesus Christ, but inside the church, each one of us is part of the body. So in order for our church to be “flavorful”—not salt that has lost its taste, but good and flavorful salt—we must be well connected to one another.
Then how can we be well connected? Like the ingredients inside kimbap, we need to stay close to one another. We need to meet often, reach out often, and talk with one another often. As we stay close, even our differences will slowly be shaped and softened, and in the end, we will become one. In fact, this is exactly what Jesus desired for us. Even right before He went to the cross, Jesus prayed for our unity. My hope and prayer is that we will become a community that fulfills the prayer of Jesus. And through that unity, may we become a flavorful church that brings transformation to the world.
지난 주 점심에 섬김 목장의 헌신으로, 맛있는 김밥을 먹었습니다. 그런데 김밥을 먹었더니 예전에 섬겼던 교회에서의 일들이 주마등처럼 스처 지나갔습니다. 팬더믹 때 모일 수도 없고, 식사도 할 수 없다보니 아내와 저는 매주일 아침마다 김밥을 만들었습니다. 그리고 온라인 예배가 끝나면 그 김밥을 들고 성도님들의 가정들을 일일이 심방했었습니다. 그러며 계속 연결되어 있으려고 노력했습니다.
그런데 원래 김밥에 그런 연결의 의미가 있다는 것 아십니까? 김밥에는 서로 다른 다양한 재료들이 들어갑니다. 겉으로 보기에는 김으로 되어 있지만, 그 안에는, 다양한 재료들이 밥과 함께 잘 하나로 연결되어 있어야 합니다. 그래야 최고의 맛을 낼 수 있습니다. 그런데 교회도 마찬가지입니다. 교회는 예수 그리스도라는 겉 모습 안에, 우리들 각자가 들어가 있습니다. 그래서 이 교회가 맛있으려면(맛을 잃은 소금이 아닌 맛있는 소금이 되려면) 잘 연결되어 있어야 합니다.
그런데 잘 연결되려면 어떻게 해야 하는지 아십니까? 김밥의 재료들처럼 서로 붙어 있어야 합니다. 자주 만나고 자주 연락하고 자주 대화하면서 가깝게 붙어 있어야 합니다. 그러면 서로의 다름도 깍여져서 결국에는 같아지며 하나가 되게 됩니다. 사실 예수님께서 우리들에게 원하셨던 것도 바로 그런 것입니다. 예수님께서는 죽기 바로 직전까지도, 우리의 하나됨을 위해 기도했습니다. 소망하는 것은, 우리가 예수님의 그 기도를 이루어 드리는 공동체가 될 수 있기를 소망합니다. 그래서 세상을 변화시키는 맛있는 교회가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
