As our church has grown, we have felt the need for more space where we can enjoy fellowship together. For about a year, we have been thinking about how we could create more gathering spaces. After much thought, we decided to make use of our backyard, and a few weeks ago, we began the renovation.
We cut down even some of the trees that we had kept for a long time because they held special meaning to us. We also paved some of the unused areas with concrete and laid down fresh, beautiful grass.
While the lawn was being installed, the workers shared something interesting with us. They said that when you want to put in new grass, you cannot simply lay it down wherever you want. First, the poor soil has to be removed. Then it has to be replaced with good soil before the new grass can be laid. Only then can the new grass take root and grow well.
But this is not true only of grass.
If we want something new to grow well in our lives, we also need to first remove the unhealthy things that have remained from the past. If we do not, the new things may not be able to take root and grow as they should.
So whenever we begin something new, we first need to recognize what has not been good in our lives. We need to think about what has been keeping us from changing. And after those things have been carefully removed, we can begin to pursue change. That is when true change can take place.
Perhaps this is what Jesus meant when He spoke about putting new wine into new wineskins.
Do not put new wine into old wineskins. If you do, the wineskins may burst, and even the new wine will be lost. My prayer is that we will prepare new wineskins for the new wine God desires to pour into our lives.
May we continue to be renewed and changed, and through that transformation, may we live out God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will.
교회가 성장하다 보니 1년 전부터 더 많은 교제 공간이 필요하게 되었습니다. 그래서 어떻게 하면 교제 공간들을 더 만들 수 있을까 고민하던 끝에 백 야드를 사용해 보기로 하고 몇 주 전부터 백 야드 공사를 시작했었습니다. 그동안 의미가 있어서 그냥 놔두었던 나무들도 다 자르고 또 버려져 있던 공간들에는 시멘트 포장을 해주었습니다. 또 잔디도 다시 예쁘게 깔아주었습니다.
그런데 잔디를 공사하시는 분들이 아주 재미있는 이야기를 하나 해 주셨답니다. 잔디를 새로 하고 싶다고 그냥 아무렇게나 하면 절대로 안 된답니다. 새로운 잔디를 깔려면 먼저 나쁜 흙들부터 제거하고, 좋은 흙들로 교체해 준 다음에 깔아야 한답니다. 그래야 그 깐 잔디들이 잘 자랄 수 있답니다.
그런데 어디 그런 것들이 잔디뿐입니까? 우리의 인생들에도 새로운 것들이 잘 자라게 하려면, 먼저 과거부터 있었던 안 좋은 것들부터 제거해야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 새로운 것들이 잘 자랄 수 없습니다.
그래서 새로운 것들을 시작할 때는, 무엇이 안 좋은 것들이었는지부터 알아야 합니다. 무엇이 나의 변화를 막고 있었는지부터 생각해야 합니다. 그리고 그런 것들을 충분히 제거하고 난 후에 변화를 시도해야 합니다. 그래야 제대로 변화될 수 있습니다. 그리고 그런 과정이 바로 예수님께서 말씀하신 새 술을 새 부대에 담는 것입니다.
절대로 새 술을 낡은 부대에 담지 마십시오. 그러면 기껏 담은 새 술이 터져서 다 버리게 됩니다. 그러니 새 술은 꼭 새 부대에 잘 담으시길 축복합니다. 그래서 잘 변화되심으로 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 온전하신 뜻을 잘 이루시길 축복합니다.
