Since moving to the United States, I rarely go out in the evenings, so I do not often get the chance to see the moon. That is why, whenever I happen to see it still shining in the sky during early morning prayer, it feels especially good to see it.
That happened again this week. Since it was Chuseok, the full moon was still hanging in the early morning sky. It had been a while since I had seen such a beautiful full moon, and I was so glad to see it that I took out my camera and tried to capture it.
But something unexpected happened. There was a brightly lit church sign next to the moon, and because of that light, the moon did not appear nearly as bright in the picture as I had hoped. I was disappointed.
As I looked at the picture, I began to think about the difference between a brighter light and a dimmer one. If the light from the church sign had not been there, I probably could have captured the moon shining beautifully. But because there was a brighter light nearby, the moonlight no longer looked bright at all.
Then I realized how much this resembles our lives.
When God, the very best of all, is not close to us, even things that are not truly good can look attractive. But when we are close to God, the One who is truly good, those same things no longer seem so appealing. Perhaps that is why people who walk closely with God often have less desire for the things of this world.
So I began to examine myself.
How close am I to God right now?
If there are still many worldly desires in my heart, perhaps that is a sign that I have grown distant from Him. And if that is true, then I need to draw near to Him again.
So I pray.
I pray that I may grow closer and closer to God. I pray that my heart would stop chasing after other things and that I would seek only God, the One who is better than anything else this world can offer.
May God become the brightest light in my life, so that everything else grows dim in comparison.
